Title: The Dynamic Interplay of “Other-Shaping” and “Self-Shaping” of National Media Image - A Review of The Study of China’s Image in American Films and Its Influence
Abstract: The national media image is a dynamic representation that continuously flows amidst the confrontation of discourses between the other and the self. The Study of China’s Image in American Films and Its Influence provides a comprehensive and systematic analysis, supported by rich historical literature, of the stereotypical images of China and the phenomenon of “self-Orientalism” that are constructed in both traditional and contemporary American films featuring China. This analysis reveals the complex political, economic, cultural, and social backgrounds behind the observed phenomena. The process of constructing media images demonstrates the dynamic interplay and mutual influence between the gaze of the other and the discourse of the subject. China has been striving to break free from the constraints of entrenched stereotypes portrayed in Western film and media, actively reshaping a more authentic and comprehensive image of China, while continually enhancing its discourse power in the global cross-cultural communication area, aiming to project a louder and more powerful voice in the world cultural stage.
