Title: Cross-cultural Emergence and Narrative Transformation of Modernity in Late Qing Novels: A Review of Modernity Studies on Late Qing Novels from a Cross-Cultural Perspective
Abstract: Modernity Research on Late Qing Novels from a Cross-Cultural Perspective by Fang Yiwei breaks through the single framework of “Western impact-Chinese response.” Based on cross-cultural vision and historical context, it systematically sorts out the research context of modernity of Late Qing novels at home and abroad, and reveals its generative context, discourse form, narrative transformation and literary history value. Based on literature review, this book explains the origin of modernity with the theory of “internal and external joint forces,” analyzes the textual modernity from the dimensions of city, desire and gender, discusses formal innovation from the aspects of narrator, skills and production mode, and re-evaluates the literary history status of Late Qing novels in the pattern of world literature. It corrects the long-term underestimation and bias towards Late Qing novels from the academic circle, providing a research path with both local standpoint and international vision for the modernity research of Chinese modern literature, thus yielding important literature reference and academic demonstration significance.
Keywords: Late Qing Novels; Modernity; Cross-cultural Perspective; Narrative Transformation; Re-evaluation of Literary History
