Abstract: The “Fräuleinwunder” (literary girl wonder) phenomenon that emerged in German literature during the 1990s sparked enduring debates about the complex relationships among gender, literature, and the market. Gender, Media, and Literature: A Study of Emerging German Women Writers Since the 1990s selects five authors—Karen Duve, Jenny Erpenbeck, Julia Franck, Judith Hermann, and Alexa Hennig von Lange—and, employing the dual perspectives of “representativeness” and “generational attributes,” breaks through the regional framework of former East and West Germany to offer an in-depth analysis of the complex representations of gender images, body narratives, and the theme of motherhood in their works, while innovatively incorporating “media” into its scope of investigation. This article reviews the book’s scholarly contributions from three dimensions—“the truth of gender,” “the contention over media,” and “the perfection of literature”—and points out that its core methodology lies in directing the research gaze toward zones of intersecting forces: the friction among gender discourses, the struggle between media logic and authorial subjectivity, and the clashes within literary expression, thereby bringing the true essence of scholarly research to light at these very crossroads. The book not only lays a solid intellectual foundation for understanding emerging German women’s writing since the 1990s but also opens new pathways for cross-disciplinary dialogue among gender studies, media studies, and literary studies.
