Title: De-ethnicisation of Chinese American Films in American Streaming Media
Abstract: Asian-dominated films in the US have undergone narrative and aesthetic shift as a result of the rise of streaming media. Compared with the conventional paradigm of intergenerational conflict set in Chinatown in previous boxoffice hits like Flower Drum Song (1961) and The Joy Luck Club (1993), The Half of It (2020) and Turning Red (2022) released on streaming platforms exemplifies a tendency of de-ethnicization. By exploring their story-telling through leveraging streaming mechanisms, the paper argues that de-ethnicization of Chinese American films help to reach wider audiences and reconstruct subjectivity.
